Benedict Cruft is currently Dean of Music at the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. In the 1970s he led a varied career as a violinist for the London Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, and from 1980 to 1984 served as the Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPO). During his years with the HKPO, he also led the Tononi String Quartet and taught at the Hong Kong Conservatory, the forerunner of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts School of Music. In 1984 he returned to London and worked with several recording orchestras, while serving as a violin professor at the Royal College of Music and as a member of various chamber music ensembles. Benedict has a particular passion for Johann Sebastian Bach's complete set of sonatas and partitas for solo violin, which he has performed as a pair of concerts nearly eighty times. He has performed them at the Brighton Festival every year since 1989 as well as in France, Hong Kong, Macau, mainland China and Vietnam. His recording of the complete unaccompanied Bach works for solo violin is available on Tononi Records.
