Music Amuses

Did you know that Bach was jailed for nearly a month in 1717?

In 1708 Bach was hired by the Duke of Weimar as the court organist. He stayed with the Duke for nine years, during which time he was promoted to the rank of concertmaster of the court orchestra. But when Bach was passed over for another promotion, he decided to accept an offer from the Prince of Anhalt-Cöthen. Furious that Bach had arranged to leave before securing "permission" to do so, the Duke threw Bach into jail from 6 November to 2 December 1717 to punish him for being so independent-minded. In the end the Duke released Bach from jail and gave him permission to leave to take up the new position.

The CCOHK will perform some of Bach’s masterpieces in their upcoming BACH FOR MORE concert. Be sure not to miss it!
