Director’s Notes
Dear Friends,
2006 is the Year of Italy in China. To mark the occasion the CCOHK, in collaboration with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, the Consulate General of Italy in Hong Kong and Radio 4 of RTHK, will present TWO exciting and unique programmes of Italian music during the month of June. On 18th June (Sunday) we will perform “Cinema Amore Mio”, a concert dedicated to the music of the greatest Italian film composers of this century including Morricone, Piovani and Carpi. If you are not familiar with the names then I am sure you will know the films : The Postman, Fellini’s 8˝, Life is Beautiful, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and so on. The film arrangements are being created especially for this event by Italian violinist and composer Luca Ciarla and guitarist Marco Salcito and include improvisation and jazz.
During the month of June the CCOHK is delighted to be featured as Radio 4’s Artist-in-Residence. On 29th June (Thursday) we will give a concert of Italian chamber music entitled “Viva Italia!” in Studio 1, Broadcasting House, RTHK. The concert will be broadcast live on Radio 4 at 8 pm. Members of the CCOHK will perform chamber works by Rossini, Verdi and Rota for flute, oboe, violin, viola, cello and harp. Join us live for the atmosphere at the studio as we discover that Nino Rota and Verdi wrote more than film music and opera!
Other highlights during our Artist-in-Residence week at Radio 4 include a delay broadcast of our concert with the charismatic British baritone Sir Thomas Allen which was held back in March. This takes place on 16 June (Friday) at 8 pm.
I am looking forward to concluding our season with the sounds of sunny Italy - Italian film music, chamber music and opera arias. It will be a great way to wind down before the summer. Hope you can listen in!
