Spotlight

Interview with Artem Konstantinov, principal cellist of the CCOHK.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?

I am from Russia and have been performing in Hong Kong for over a year.

What brought you to Hong Kong?

I was attracted by the wide variety of musical activities in Hong Kong and also by the musicians here, who are interesting and pleasant to perform with. I love Hong Kong.

What do you enjoy most about playing in the CCOHK?

I enjoy playing with the amicable musicians in the CCOHK. I particularly enjoy the rehearsals, during which we can play music undisturbed.

Which CCOHK guest artist has made the biggest impression on you?

The famous British baritone, Sir Thomas Allen. He is also a fantastic actor!

Which CCOHK concert has been the most memorable for you?

The “Cinema Amore Mio” concert given in June 2006 which featured Italian film music. The programme was refreshingly new and interesting.

How did you come about choosing the cello?

In Russia, anyone who wants to learn music has to attend a music school or study with a private teacher. Most parents send their children to learn to play the piano or the violin. Relatively few children learn the cello. My first teacher in school asked if I wanted to learn the cello. When I said “yes” he gave me a cello to try. Shortly afterwards he told me I was a born cellist, and in three months’ time I won my first competition. I was only seven at the time!

Name one of the most important milestones in your music career.

None so far. All my milestones lie ahead!

What message do you have for our friends?

Love music, as it nourishes your soul. Needless to say, we hope you will attend our concerts. All our concerts are enjoyable and memorable!
