Spotlight

Interview with Mike Chau, principal violist of the CCOHK.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?

I was born and grew up in Hong Kong, which means that I have been here for over thirty years!

What do you enjoy most about playing in the CCOHK?

I enjoy performing the special and interesting repertoire programmed by the CCOHK.

Which CCOHK guest artist has made the biggest impression on you?

Violinist Benedict Cruft, who was the guest concertmaster and soloist in our “Bach for More” concert in November 2005. His stylistic interpretation of Bach’s music made an impression on me.

Which CCOHK concert has been the most memorable for you?

There were two. One was "A Tango Sensation" in June 2000. I seldom play tango pieces, so it was a rare opportunity for me to explore these works. Another concert was “Bach for More" in November 2005. It was an all-Bach concert, which is not often staged in Hong Kong. Moreover, as mentioned above, I was extremely impressed by Mr. Cruft’s approach to Bach.

Why did you choose the viola?

I was attracted by its tone colour. It is so deep and beautiful – just like the human voice.

Name some of the most important milestones in your music career.

The opportunity to play in a master class hosted by my idol - Yuri Bashmet, the viola virtuoso - when I was studying in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Another milestone was receiving a full scholarship awarded by the Boston Conservatory of Music to further my studies on the viola.

What message do you have for our friends?
