December 2006 - Issue No. 22

Director’s Notes

Dear Friends,

Tis the season to be busy! I hope that amid the Christmas rush you will take some time out with family and friends in order to enjoy our festive programmes.

The CCOHK staged the Hong Kong debut of “The Snowman & The Bear” in Cantonese in December 2003 to a packed house at Sha Tin Town Hall. On 10 December the concert versions of these two winter-time classics will be re-run in English along with the animated films. There will be a matinee at 3pm and an evening performance at 7:30pm. The stories will be narrated by two of Hong Kong’s most popular radio personalities, Jonathan Douglas (in “The Snowman”) and Harry Wong (in “The Bear”). Three young talents from Hong Kong - Joshua Davy (boy soprano), Chu Pui-ying (girl soprano) and Vivian Yau (girl soprano) - will sing the theme songs “Walking in the Air” from “The Snowman” and “Somewhere a Star Shines for Everyone” from “The Bear”. We will also screen the film during the concert and there will be a surprise for all the children at the end of the show, so don’t miss the chance to hear and see The Snowman & The Bear with the whole family!

On Christmas Eve we will be repeating the very popular concert in Hong Kong Park organized by RTHK Radio 4 last year. This time the music is predominantly Vivaldi. The brilliant violinist Huang Meng-la will be performing Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” - the perfect work for the surrounds of Hong Kong Park! Together with the choir of the Opera Society of Hong Kong we will also perform Vivaldi’s “Gloria”. To open the programme local trumpeters Andres Nykvist and Fung Ka-hing will “sound the trumpet” in Vivaldi’s concerto for two trumpets, and to round off a spectacular evening of music we will have vocal soloists Yuki Ip, Carol Lin, Richard Frewer, Edmund Kwan and the choir join us for a joyous carol medley. This concert is free – but make sure you arrive EARLY to get a seat!! You can also watch the programme on TVB Pearl later on the same evening.

As the year-round celebrations of Mozart’s anniversary come to a close, you may also like to listen to our “Make it Mozart” concert which was recorded at Loke Yew Hall, the University of Hong Kong, in November by clicking here.

Finally I would like to take this opportunity to wish you - our valued friends and supporters - a most joyous Christmas.
