Interview with Shelagh Heath, cellist of the CCOHK.
Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?
I am from Dunfermline, Scotland and I have been in Hong Kong for nearly twelve years.
What brought you to Hong Kong?
I was offered a position with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.
What do you enjoy most about playing in the CCOHK?
I like playing with a small group of players and getting to know new interesting repertoire.
Which CCOHK guest artist has made the biggest impression on you?
Rainer Honeck, the concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic and the soloist in the CCOHK concert entitled "Vienna in Hong Kong", in which he played a Haydn concerto and a Schubert rondo. His phrasing and tone were exquisite and he inspired us to play in a more beautiful way.
Which CCOHK concert has been the most memorable for you?
The concert entitled "Vienna in Hong Kong" mentioned above and the recent one entitled "Tango!" featuring inspired music by Piazzolla. Both were very memorable.
How did you come about choosing the cello?
Cello was the instrument offered at our school at which I was studying. At the time I did not know for sure what a cello was, but I had seen Jacqueline du Pré giving masterclasses on TV. I already played piano, but when I started on the cello, I took to it straight away.
Name one of the most important milestones in your music career.
When I was fourteen I started travelling to Glasgow every Saturday to attend classes at the junior department of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. I took cello and piano lessons and also attended classes in theory, harmony, choral singing as well as symphonic and chamber works. It was my favourite day of the week.
