Interview with Mary Golden, violinist of the CCOHK.
Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?
I was born in Memphis, Tennessee in the United States. I have been living in Hong Kong for about three years now.
What brought you to Hong Kong?
My husband and I had the chance to move to Hong Kong because of his job and we decided that it would be a great opportunity to live abroad.
What do you enjoy most about playing in the CCOHK?
I like playing with a smaller group of musicians as it lends itself to a more sensitive type of group playing.
Which CCOHK guest artist has made the biggest impression on you?
I have enjoyed playing with all of the artists who have played with us but if I had to choose, I would choose bandoneon player Daniel Binelli and pianist Polly Ferman, soloists in the "Tango" concert staged in January 2007. Both musicians played their instruments with a passion that was infectious! Binelli’s ability to express himself in such a sensitive way was a rare and exciting experience for both the audience and the orchestra.
Which CCOHK concert has been the most memorable for you?
The "Scotland the Brave" concert we presented in January 2006. It was so much fun playing with the Scottish folk ensemble "Whistlebinkies". Also I will never forget the local group of bagpipers - the "Red Guards" - who joined us on the stage for a few songs. It was quite an extraordinary event!
How did you come about choosing the violin?
My two elder sisters played the violin and my mother often took me along to their lessons. I begged to play as I wanted to be just like them!
Name one of the most important milestones in your music career.
I would have to say that being able to play my instrument in a professional setting has been the greatest milestone for me so far. It is very satisfying to play among well-trained musicians who share the same passion.
What message do you have for our friends?
Thank you so very much for all your support and I hope to continue seeing you at our concerts in the future! A faithful audience is an orchestra’s most valuable asset and it is wonderful to know that the CCOHK is so well endowed.
