Interview with Rebecca Ng, percussionist of the CCOHK.
Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?
I was born in Hong Kong and have lived here ever since. As a student, however, I spent three years in the United States to complete my graduate studies at the New England Conservatory in Massachusetts.
How did you come about choosing percussion?
I started learning piano at an early age and took up the trombone later. As a trombone player I frequently sat in the back row of the orchestra. Gradually I became attracted to the vigour and energy of the percussion section. This led me to take up percussion in my first year of undergraduate studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
What do you enjoy most about playing in the CCOHK?
The interesting repertoire programmed by the CCOHK and the challenges of playing with a small group. Often the biggest challenge is getting the balance right. Loud drum rolls and crashes often need to be toned down to balance the small string section of a chamber orchestra.
Which CCOHK guest artist has made the biggest impression on you?
Michala Petri, the recorder virtuoso. I previously considered the tone colour of the recorder to be bland and monotonous, but the beautiful and expressive way in which she played the instrument changed my impression completely.
Which CCOHK concert has been the most memorable for you?
"The Snowman and the Bear" concert!! Numerous instruments and toys were placed on the stage but only two percussionists were scored to play them all. The two of us had to run back and forth to catch the right instrument at the right time.
Name one of the most important milestones in your music career.
There have been many but I think the most important milestone was the opportunity I had to study abroad and meet people from different parts of the world at the same time.
What message do you have for our friends?
I hope you enjoy the music we play. Do continue to support us by attending all our upcoming concerts.
