Artist Scoop

The Gurfinkel Clarinet Duo comprises fifteen-year-old twins Daniel and Alexander Gurfinkel. Despite their youth the brothers have already gained international recognition. They were born in Israel in 1992 to a family of esteemed clarinet players (their father Michael Gurfinkel is the principal clarinettist of the Israel Symphony Orchestra) and began clarinet lessons at the age of seven. In December 2004 they won the prestigious "Maestro" competition for young prodigies at the First Israeli Competition for Woodwind Players. This resulted in an invitation to perform with maestro Zubin Mehta and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Since then they have appeared worldwide in Germany, Russia, Mexico and the USA performing as soloists with the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Spivakov and the Moscow Soloists led by Yuri Bashmet.

"… Alexander and Daniel Gurfinkel not only look identical but also play at the same extraordinary high level. Only fifteen years old, they form a clarinet duo which will certainly hit the high ranks. Performing Bizet’s Carmen Fantasia, the twin brothers secured absolute intonation, feeling of musical style and the highest formidable sense of ensemble playing. It was a real delight to listen to their flowing phrases and excellent clarinet playing. After that no wishes were unanswered …"
