Interview with Hui Chi-loi, violinist of the CCOHK.
Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?
I come from Beijing and have been living in Hong Kong for twenty-three years.
What brought you to Hong Kong?
My parents immigrated to Hong Kong in 1980 and I joined them in 1984.
What do you enjoy most about playing in the CCOHK?
I enjoy playing the pieces programmed by the orchestra, in particular works for strings such as those by Mozart and Rossini.
Which CCOHK guest artist has made the biggest impression on you?
Sir Thomas Allen, the baritone soloist in the CCOHK concert in March 2006. His voice was rich and brilliant. He’s amazing for his age!
Which CCOHK concert has been the most memorable for you?
The "Classics for Couples" concert in October 2004, which featured my younger sister Hui Ling as piano soloist. She played magnificently, and I also gave my best in the performance. In fact that was the first time I have ever performed with my sister on stage. What a wonderful memory!
How did you come about choosing the violin?
Both my parents were musicians. I started learning the piano at a very young age, and took up ballet later. It was my father who chose the violin for me.
Name one of the most important milestones in your music career.
Moving to Hong Kong to develop my career as a musician. Before coming to Hong Kong I was accepted by the Beijing Normal University for studies. Around that time my application to immigrate to Hong Kong had just been approved, so I gave up my place in the University and came to settle in Hong Kong. I entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to pursue music studies with a major in violin and a minor in viola and percussion. Upon graduation I became a professional violinist. When the Hong Kong Sinfonietta (HKS) was established in 1990, I was one of its founding members. I played in the HKS for ten years during which time I became acquainted with Leanne Nicholls, Founder and Artistic Director of the CCOHK, who was also playing in the HKS at the time.
What message do you have for our friends?
Music is one of the most beautiful gifts that Jesus Christ gave to the world. Please listen to more music and attend more CCOHK performances.
