Music Amuses
Did you know that Sir George Martin is better known as the "FIFTH BEATLE"?
Sir George Martin is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most successful producer ever, having produced more than fifty No. 1 hit records over five decades in America and Great Britain alone. Born in London in 1926, Sir George is renowned for introducing the Beatles to the world. In fact he was the first producer to grant them an audition upon hearing their songs. As such he is frequently referred to as the "Fifth Beatle".
Although his name will always be associated with the Beatles, his award-winning work covers every conceivable recording genre and style, including classical, comedy, jazz, pop, country, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, film scores, television scores and more. In 1996 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth for his immeasurable impact and influence on music and popular culture.
Besides being a producer, Sir George Martin is also an arranger, composer, conductor, author and presenter. In the late 1940s he received classical music training in London's Guildhall School of Music, where he studied composition and classical music orchestration and developed his talents on the piano and the oboe. Since the early 1960s he has composed several movie scores. For the concert stage he composed "Three American Sketches"- a three-part suite for harmonica and strings - just prior to John Lennon’s tragic death. This work was premiered in the USA in 2002 by Robert Bonfiglio and the Wichita Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andrew Sewell.
At the CCOHK’s upcoming Harmonica Americas concert Robert Bonfiglio will perform this piece together with the Villa-Lobos harmonica concerto. Don’t miss the concert!
