Spotlight

Interview with Ariele Zanini, pianist of the CCOHK.

Where are you from and how long have you been in Hong Kong?

I am from Lyon in France, and I have been living in Hong Kong since 1995.

What brought you to Hong Kong?

Whilst on a holiday trip with my husband, I was offered a position by the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. I accepted it and have stayed here since.

What do you enjoy most about playing in the CCOHK?

The piano rarely has any part to play in an orchestra, so when it does it is a wonderful opportunity and privilege for the pianist. I enjoy the CCOHK's repertoire very much: the orchestra often presents programmes which are rarely heard in Hong Kong. The CCOHK is also a fabulous music family which brings together musicians from many different parts of the world.

Which CCOHK guest artist has made the biggest impression on you?

Robert Bonfiglio, the harmonica soloist in the "Harmonica Americas" concert staged in May 2008. He is an absolute master of the instrument!

Which CCOHK concert has been the most memorable for you?

"The Snowman and The Bear" concert staged in December 2006. It was such a festive and heartwarming programme. I look forward to performing it again this Christmas.

How did you come about choosing the piano?

I wanted to pursue a career in music. I could play several instruments but the piano was my favourite, so... . Having said that, if I had more time I would love to explore other instruments in greater depth.

Name one of the most important milestones in your music career.

Playing the recitatives in the orchestra for soprano Barbara Hendricks was memorable. Playing jazz standards for Shirley Bassey when she performed in Hong Kong was fantastic too.

What message do you have for our friends?

Music is a great medium to reach people's hearts. I hope all musicians can use this language to share their passion for music with you. This will be the best musical experience musicians can get from life.
